Swim Pace Calculator: the splits to hit your target time
A swim is won or lost in how the effort is spread across the race. Go out too hard and the back half falls apart; hold too much back and there is time left on the wall. A pace plan fixes that by giving every length a number to hit.
Quick answer: a pace plan splits a target time into per-length targets, even or negative or positive. Enter the target time, the total distance, and the split length, and the calculator prints every split and the running total.
What a pace plan gives you
Enter the target time, the total distance, and the length you want to split by, and the calculator lays out the time for each segment and the running total. Then pick how the effort is distributed: even, negative, or positive.
Even, negative, or positive
- Even splits the target evenly, so every length is the same. A clean, honest pace, and the natural default for distance free.
- Negative has the swimmer get faster as they go, the second half quicker than the first. It is the pattern most middle-distance races are won on.
- Positive front-loads the speed. Useful for sprints and for swimmers who race best from the front.
A worked example
A 500 free Sectional cut of 4:45.94, split by 50, comes out to ten lengths of 28.59 on an even pace. Pull the cut from your standards, set the pattern, and the calculator prints every split and the running total:
Shade it negative or positive
Switch the pattern and the math holds. Negative descends the splits so the swimmer finishes faster than they started, positive does the reverse, and either way the total still lands on 4:45.94. For a distance free like the 500, most coaches sit near even and shade the last 100 or 150 down for a strong close.
Swimming a cut, split by split
